Any manufacturer, who is engaged in food processing, is required by law to make sure that no dangerous or hazardous materials enter the food processing and manufacturing line. Should the unfortunate even occur, that anything contaminates the food, then the manufacturer is required to detect any such occurrence and stop the production line until the failure is remedied. One of the most serious incidents happens, when food processing machines wear out and pieces or any small parts detach from the equipment and end somehow in the food. Such incidents can happen quite often, for instance if a conveyor belt is transporting the food, sometimes the food gets contaminated by any non planned activity beyond the belt, such as a repair taking place in the vicinity of the conveyor belt, and unbeknown to the worker, some particles of the unit the repair person was working on, or from the tools, fell onto the conveyor belt.
Elaborate safety precautions and measures are being employed, that such incidents do not take place, but if they do, safety measures are employed to verify the product before it leaves the facility. One of such safety devices is a food processing metal detector.
A food processing metal detector needs to be employed somewhere by the end of the manufacturing line, depending on the packaging before or after the product has been enclosed by the material. Many such machines need to be tailored to the requirements of the manufacturer or processing chain, certain circumstances are vital, like the moisture content of the food.
These are the reasons a purchase of used food processing metal detectors is either discouraged or recommended in cases where the unit is being purchased from the original manufacturer in a refurbished state, with the option to get the unit adapted into the processing line. It is not the same if the metal detector is being used for canned soup or for bagged candy.
Food product conditions are as important as other information, like the ingredients, because some food can generate a false positive, if not properly adjusted. So make sure, if your used food processing metal detecting unit is being purchased from a third party, that the necessary adjustments in accordance to your processing line are being made. Different products require different operating environment, packaging ice cream will require a dissimilar metal detector than bear claw fabrication and packaging. Besides the already mentioned moisture content, which can corrode wrongly applied metal detectors, rejection mechanisms are also to be considered, when contamination has been detected.

White’s metal detectors are valued to be the best in the business. But the company did not start out with metal detectors. Actually, Ken White and his wife, Olive White, started as prospectors for uranium. When their Geiger counter was not adequate, the headphones used made them not hear rattlesnakes approaching, he decided to build his own. The product has proven to be very good, so he offered his design to the manufacturer of the discarded machine, but they ridiculed him. He decided to go into business on his own, employing another worker, whereby they were able to build one Geiger counter a day. They became very successful, they had to expand and within a decade employed over sixty workers. Unfortunately, shortly thereafter, the United States government abandoned the public purchase of uranium.
One of the dealers suggested to the Whites to switch to manufacture of metal detectors. They built one prototype, which the dealer used to check the efficiency. He found some artifacts, coins and a silver item, which has proven that the product works. From that time, the company constantly expanded and developed the metal detecting apparatusses; recently there are over twenty different units in their product catalogue.
Son Ken White and Mary White are leading the company now, improving the designs and bringing the metal detecting into the twenty first century. Their current flagship model, DFX 300 E-Series metal detector, is a sophisticated machine with the capability of accepting user programmed interfaces, or using one of the many available user and professional designed programs. The patented signal filtration uses up to six ground filters, in order to work better in waste laden areas. The supplied nickel cadmium battery is able of up to fifteen hours of uninterrupted function. Pricing is a bit steep, around twelve hundred dollars, the British outlet, located in Scotland, has the price tag set at almost nine hundred British pounds.
But there are metal detectors available for any purpose and also for any pocket, most notably a waterproof unit, called the BeachHunter 300, which allows for metal detecting in and out of the water. It does not matter if it’s saltwater or freshwater, is meant to provide the ultimate ease of use and employs batteries which are of the common “AA” kind, providing up to twenty hours of treasure hunting. The control box is detachable and there is a pouch delivered with the unit, in order to wear it on the hip or mounted on the chest. It is waterproof up to twenty five feet below the water surface.

Metal detectors have become increasingly popular lately and many new or improved models have been introduced for this trendy hobby of relic hunting. Machines are becoming more and more technical, with all possible advanced technology implemented. Current high end models go beyond metal detecting, providing radar technology with a 3D display of the ground below, up to a 25 foot depth.
But regular people practicing relic hunting for fun do not want to go berserk with features and expensive machinery. Nevertheless, some implemented features are deemed necessary and useful and established themselves as standard features with quality producers of metal detecting apparatuses. One such trait which is generally viewed as vital to the relic hunting devotee is the ground balance.
What is ground balance and why do metal detectors, or rather relic hunters need it?
When relic hunters are on the hunt, they search with their metal detectors the soil below for buried and hidden metal artifacts. These relics are the ultimate goal of a treasure hunter, no matter if they are simple five cent pieces or Spanish silver dollars. Unfortunately, in the soil, there are not only such treasures, but other minerals and junk metal, predominantly iron. Mineralized soil very often did disturb metal detectors and delivered false positives, until someone figured out how to eliminate such false positives with ground balance.
Ground balancing a metal detector is a function whereby the user manually, by means of presets or with automatic ground balancing features is able to eliminate these minerals and iron, which deliver these false positives, or mask the true treasure hidden between them. Versions which feature preset ground balancing in combination with manual adjustments are also being offered.
Metal detectors with an auto balancing software controlling the metal detector and automatically adjusting the sensing mechanism are more expensive than the ones with preset features or with the manual adjustment capabilities. The sophisticated programming automatically adjusts to the soil beneath, thereby eliminating the unwanted minerals and metals like iron and allowing the metal detector to detect only the metals which are meant to be targeted. Unfortunately such automatized feature is not always the best solution, because if the apparatus is adjusting at the moment when you are passing over an object which you would actually like to find, the metal detector will not “see” it. On the other hand, if an artifact is lodged in mineralized soil, with a lot of iron, once the automatic adjustment is done, you can search the soil as if it were free of any disturbances.

Most metal detecting units which are made for relic hunters, even the ones which were used during the World War II for mine sweeping purposes, were outfitted with a headphone jack. Some relic hunters are swearing that they would not be able to detect anything, if they did not use headphones, but others say that headphones are a security risk and sometimes make you a virtual recluse when you go on detecting for some eight hours and not hear a single thing, but the buzzing of the coils.
The reason why most of the relic hunters use headphones and not the usually built in speaker is that they do not want to disturb other people in the vicinity. The constant noise would very often disturb people, who are in such places where relic hunting makes sense, looking to relax and unwind, taking all the fun out of the metal detection. Other treasure hunters swear that they need the headphones in order to hear the faint signals of deeper buried artifacts, which they would not be able to hear with the built in speaker.
Nevertheless, people who did wear headphones very often have bad experiences with the fact that they are virtually hearing none of the outer world. Experiences were reported, where perverts were actually trying to molest or flashers did flash the stunned relic hunter, to the fact that some people were unable to hear wolves approaching and were seriously hurt by them. As a consequence, the relic hunting communities have established a new standard, where one ear handle is being kept off ear, to keep the contact with reality and awareness of the possible approaching of danger. During daytime, in public, both ears can be covered by the phones and thus a more accurate and effective work can be done, but in other conditions, at night, in areas where there are barely other people around, taking one off does the trick.
The quality of the headphones varies wildly as well. Treasure hunters and manufacturers alike have stated that working with a higher quality model, which is featuring good dynamic response and a broad frequency spectrum, may provide for better results when working with headphones. Being that only a small spectrum of the frequency range is being addressed by the machine, low quality headphones may suffice.
